Here are some simple ways to help keep your lungs strong and healthy: - Sip on Holy Basil tea (iced or hot) to open airways and reduce inflammation. Holy Basil is known as The Queen of Herbs in Ayurveda and has so many amazing benefits Try NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) to thin mucus and support lung tissue Diffuse eucalyptus or peppermint to relax and clear the airways Add hot herbs like turmeric, ginger, and cayenne to your diet to help thin mucus Eat foods rich in omega-3s like fatty fish, flaxseed, and nuts to calm inflammation in the lungs, or try an omega-3 supplement Mullein is a soothing herb that breaks up mucus and protects cells Vitamin C supports immune response and protects lung tissue. Vitamin C supplements are great, as well as from food sources like red peppers And don’t forget — regular exercise helps improve breathing and reduce inflammation! Breathe easier this summer by giving your lungs the love and care they deserve ๐Button

Health Tip Thursday is back and we’re talking Liver Care! ๐ค Your liver has more than 500 functions in your body!!! Our modern day lifestyle puts quite a strain on the liver (and gallbladder), and they truly appreciate the occasional tune-up. There are lots of simple yet effective ways to care for your liver, such as: - Drink 7-10 glasses of filtered or spring water a day. Adding lemon and/or 1-2 tsp of apple cider vinegar can help stimulate the liver and promote cleansing. - The liver and lymphatic systems are closely intertwined. Dry body brushing 2-3x a week keeps the lymphatic system clean to support the liver. - This one is obvious, but eliminate alcohol. Alcohol strains and damages the liver and can lead to liver function issues and disease. Try switching to some of the great non-alcoholic mocktails and spirits on the market! - Add beets and beet juice to your diet. Beets have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help protect the liver from damage and oxidative stress. - Liver congestion can be relieved by using castor oil packs over the liver area, 30 minutes daily for one week. - Eat liver-loving foods regularly. Coffee, green tea, grapefruit, blueberries, cranberries, grapes, cruciferous veggies, nuts, and fatty fish are all great options. Supplements & herbs ๐ฟ - Milk Thistle on its own or in combination with other liver loving herbs supports the liver and promotes detoxification. - NAC has been shown to help prevent liver injury and improve overall function. - Berberine improves lipid metabolism and helps reduce liver fat, helping to prevent fatty liver disease. - Omega-3s also help reduce liver fat and inflammation. Check out the Health Tips page on our website for more liver health tips and tips for other areas of health! ๐ฑButton

NEW MINI SERIES: April’s Functional Faves โ๏ธ๐ง โจWelcome to Part 1 of our summer drink series, where I (April, Marketing Manager here at Jo Anne’s Place) share my favourite functional drink recipes to keep you cool, energized, and feeling good all season long ๐ซถ๐ผ First up: Whipped Iced Dirty Chai Latte — a creamy, spiced, and lightly sweetened iced latte with a functional mushroom twist. Here’s how to make it: * Add 2 tbsp Organic Traditions Dirty Chai Mix, 2 tbsp coconut sugar, and 2–5 tbsp boiling water to a bowl. * Using a hand or stand mixer, whip on high for 2–5 minutes until light and fluffy. * Taste test. It’ll be strong — but remember you’ll be diluting with milk. Add more coconut sugar if you like it sweeter. * Fill a tall glass with ice and add your favourite milk about ¾ full (I love Earth’s Own Zero Sugar Oat). * Spoon the whipped chai/coffee on top, then stir with a straw or spoon to swirl it all together. * Sip, snap a photo, and enjoy. Be sure to tag us! Organic Traditions latte mixes, matcha, and more are 15% off all month long at Jo Anne’s Place ๐ฑ โจStay tuned for Part 2 next week!Button

Heat triggering your migraines? ๐ฅ๐ This extreme heat and humidity we’re experiencing can trigger headaches and migraines - which is no fun. The most important thing is make sure your staying hydrated and getting plenty of electrolytes ๐ง Here are some additional ways to ease migraines: Omega-3s & Curcumin, individually and in combination, have been found on several studies to prevent and ease migraines due to anti inflammatory properties Ginger tea can be effective in easing the nausea and even pain that comes with migraines. If you don’t want to drink hot tea in the summer, make an iced tea ๐ซ Magnesium is super important for brain health, and a magnesium deficiency is associated with increased occurrence of migraines B vitamins, specifically B6, B9, & B12 have been found to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines CoQ10 has also been found to prevent and reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of migraine attacks Essential oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint have calming effects that can ease tension during migraine attacks. Roll-ons are a great option for this! ๐ฟ While caffeine dependency can be a cause of migraines, caffeine can also help ease migraine pain - which is why you’ll find it in some over the counter headache medications. If you find caffeine helps, matcha is a great option because while it contains caffeine, it also has L-tremaine which has calming effects of the body and mind. Again, an iced matcha latte is a great option for the summer heat! There are also homeopathic remedies that can help ease migraines, such as Headaches & Migraines Pellets from Homeocan Our staff are always here to chat with you and help you find something that fits your needs and budget ๐ฑButton

Deet? Nah, essential oils! ๐ง๐ฟ Certain essential oils have properties that help to repel mosquitos and other summertime bugs! If applying to your skin, always remember to dilute in water, witch hazel, or a carrier oil like jojoba. You’ll also want to reapply regularly. Cinnamon - A study in Taiwan found that cinnamon oil can kill off mosquito eggs, and can act as a repelllent against adult mosquitos. Lemongrass is a great deterrent due to an organic compound in it called aldehydes, which bugs dislike. Citronella is a common alternative to deet products. It can provide up to 3 hours of protection from mosquitos when combined with vanillin. Tea tree oil - Field testing in Australia found that repellents containing tea tree oil were effective against mosquitos, bush flies, and biting midges. Other essential oils that can be helpful for fighting mosquitos are lemon eucalyptus, lavender, thyme, and peppermint. Make your own DIY bug spray by combining a few with some witch hazel and distilled or boiled water! We also have some deet-free natural bug spray options in store โ๏ธButton

The Story of Jo Anne’s Place is one rooted in the Kawartha Lakes ๐๐ Jo Anne’s Place began in 1976 in Lindsay, when Jo Anne Fallaise opened a small 500 sq ft shop in her home with the support of her husband, Murray. As the local demand for natural health products grew, the store expanded—first into another home, then into a storefront—always keeping its roots close to the community. Jo Anne and Murray lived and raised their family in Omemee for many years, and their deep connection to the Kawartha Lakes shaped the values and spirit of the business. In 1985, Jo Anne’s Place expanded into Peterborough, opening its first location on Water Street, followed by our current Lansdowne Street store in later years. From humble beginnings to becoming a trusted local staple, Jo Anne’s Place remains proudly family-owned and deeply rooted in the communities of Lindsay, Peterborough, and the Kawartha Lakes. It doesn’t get more local than Jo Anne’s Place. We live local. We love local. We ARE local ๐คButton

Let’s answer some FAQs about our bulk bags: “Are the bags compostable or recyclable?” - Some of our bulk bags are compostable, some are recyclable. Compostable bags will have the Turtle symbol on the back of the bag ๐ข, while recyclable bags have the recycle symbol on the back โป๏ธ “What is Turtle Films?” - We work with Rootree to make our bulk bags, and Turtle Films is the name of their proprietary (but 3rd party tested) compostable material that the bags are made of. “What are the compostable bags made of?” - The compostable bags (Turtle Films) are made of 98% certified home compostable materials like wood pulp cellulose, starch blend and other non-GMO plant-based renewable materials. “Do the compostable bags really compost?” - Yes! Several of our staff members have put the compostable bags in their home compost bins and saw them break down. It can take them 8-12 months to fully decompose. “Where do I put the compostable bags?” - If you have a home compost bin, that is your best bet. You can place them in your kitchen compost bin collected by the city - however because they resemble plastic, they may not be properly dealt with at the processing facility and could be sent to the landfill. The good news is that if sent to the landfill, they still will not turn into microplastics or release harmful chemicals into the environment. “How long can the compostable bags last?” - The compostable bags are designed to last up to 6 months when stored between 15-16 celcius at low humidity. “What are the recyclable bags made of and how to dispose of them?” - The recyclable bags are made of Polyethylene (FDA approved) and incorporates Post-Consumer recycled and Post-Industrial recycled materials. They are recyclable under Code 2 and can be placed in your blue bin. Have any more questions? Leave em in the comments โคต๏ธButton

Motherhood is how our company began ๐ฑ Our founder, Jo Anne, recognized that her children were experiencing food allergies and other health challenges but had few options available in rural Lindsay, Ontario. Over the years, Jo Anne’s daughter Margo was by her side, sharing in this journey of expanding her vision of creating a healthy community. Working alongside her mother, Margo learned the in’s and out’s of running a business, following the ever changing trends and experiencing first-hand the benefits of healthy living as she raised her own two daughters. Margo and many staff are also mothers themselves. They say it takes a community to raise a child, we have seen the positive effects within our Jo Anne’s Place community. We celebrate the successes and offer support during the rough times, and we are proud to have multiple generations of families shopping and working at Jo Anne’s Place ๐คButton

4 ingredients that can boost women’s health ๐๐ผโ๏ธ Women’s Health is a big focus for us this month, so let’s chat about some ingredients (minerals, herbs, foods) that can boost women’s overall health and help ease certain conditions commonly experienced by women. Magnesium is a powerhouse that is essential for over 300 reactions in our bodies. For women, magnesium can be particularly helpful for achieving hormonal balance, maintaining heart health, easing PMS symptoms, and promoting sleep ๐ด Chasteberry (also known as Vitex) is a plant that can be helpful to women at any stage of life. Many find it eases PMS symptoms like breast pain and headaches. It can also improve progesterone levels, which can increase fertility. For menopausal women, it can help ease night sweats and hot flashes! If you’re not familiar with Inositol (Myo & D-Chiro-Inositol), it’s a form of sugar needed for the development and growth of cells. It is naturally produced by the body but can also be found in foods. It has been studied for its impact on improving metabolic syndrome and ability to ease symptoms of PCOS and support fertility in those with PCOS. Ashwagandha is everywhere these days, but for good reason. For women, ashwagandha is a versatile herb/root that can ease anxiety, help balance hormones, and manage both menopause and the menstrual cycle. Womensense does a great job of including a mix of these ingredients (with other helpful ones) in their supplements which are specifically formulated to benefit women’s health and help ease specific conditions like PCOS and hormonal imbalances. Our Staff Pick this month comes from the lovely Nicole, our Lansdowne St Store Manager! โค๏ธ Nicole’s pick this month is a double-feature of Flora Iron+ and Ferritin+. If you’re feeling sluggish, tired all the time, or dizzy - these symptoms may be a sign of low iron. Women are also at a higher risk for iron deficiency, especially during reproductive years. Flora Iron+ and Ferritin+ are great options for getting those iron and ferritin levels back up to par. You are probably familiar with iron, but what’s ferritin? Ferritin is a protein that contains iron and helps store it within various parts of the body. Flora’s Ferritin+ is a great option if you are concerned about digestive irritation. It is easily digestible and won’t cause GI upset or constipation. It’s also vegan, made from organic peas. Flora’s Iron+ with B Complex is an amazing liquid formula that is easily absorbed by the body (and gentle on digestion) and helps boost energy levels even more with a variety of B Vitamins! We also love that these Flora products are made in Canada ๐จ๐ฆ Our Product Educators are here to chat and help you discern which product is right for you. Get 20% off select Flora products, including these, until May 31, 2025 at Jo Anne’s Place!Button

This week is Canadian Fertility Awareness Week, a movement to help break the silence and raise awareness around fertility. And while it is often thought of as a ‘taboo’ topic, at least 1 in 6 Canadians struggle with fertility, which can take its own toll on relationships, mental health, and more. So it’s important to talk about! We thought this would be a good time to revisit a Wellness on Purpose podcast episode from 2023, where we chatted with Naturopathic Doctor Rory Gibbons about ways to support men and women’s fertility. We love this episode because Marissa and Rory reframe the conversation to focus on the positives: how nutrition, lifestyle, and supplements are powerful tools to enhance and maintain fertility ๐ Give it a listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or our website ๐งButton

Earth Day is Every Day ๐๐ Protecting and preserving the Earth is one of our top priorities here at Jo Anne’s Place. It’s even in our Mission Statement: “Inspiring Wellness on Purpose, now and for future generations.” There are no future generations if we don’t take care of our environment! Sustainable practices within our business include proper recycling, composting, and giving ‘imperfect’, bruised, or slightly off produce to staff members who have livestock or wildlife on their properties! We also offer ‘Produce Seconds’ at a reduced price to customers. Our Bulk Bags are made from recyclable and compostable materials as well. And choosing Certified Organic produce is a major factor. Organic farming plays a huge role in protecting our planet, from keeping waterways clean to preserving soil integrity. Fair trade is also extremely important to us, because sustainability is about supporting the equity of humans, too. By sourcing the vast majority (over 80%) of the products on our shelves within Canada, often within Ontario, we help cut down on emissions through transportation. We are also proud to carry many brands with sustainable practices and products with zero, minimal, recyclable, or reusable packaging. ๐Button

Welcoming Lee’s Suncatchers to Jo Anne’s Place โ๏ธ๐ “It all began with a single feather. After a little bird flew into my window, I found one of his feathers and placed it on a suncatcher in his honour. That moment sparked my love for creating rainbow-makers. Do you know the benefits of tallow skincare? ๐ฎ Beef tallow is a fat produced from cooking down, or rendering, the fat that surrounds the organs of a cow. Many people use it for cooking, but recently it has gained popularity as a skin-care product because of its many natural benefits! The use of tallow on skin dates way back to ancient Egypt and Rome, with groups of Indigenous peoples also using animal fats to treat various skincare conditions. Tallow mimics natural skin oils, making it deeply moisturizing, helping to maintain skin hydration. Support your skin barrier with tallow! It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can calm redness, irritation, and can benefit skin conditions like acne and eczema. Tallow is packed with antioxidants and vitamins E, A, D, and K! We are proud to carry two LOCALLY MADE tallow brands that have whipped tallow balm and tallow creams with essential oils to benefit various specific skin conditions ๐คButton
