Eat With The Seasons: Fall Edition

There’s something special about cooking and eating in harmony with the seasons. As the weather cools and the leaves change, fall brings an abundance of delicious, nourishing produce to enjoy, from crisp apples and hearty squash to leafy greens and other autumn favourites.

At Jo Anne’s Place, we love using seasonal produce not only because it’s delicious, but because whole, nutrient-rich foods are an important part of supporting our overall health and wellness. Fall’s colourful fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre, a key nutrient for healthy digestion, immune health, gut flora, and overall wellness.

And as we head into the colder months, nourishing our bodies (and minds) becomes even more important. A balanced diet with a variety of whole foods helps provide the nutrients we need to support a healthy immune system and keep us feeling our best and keep those pesky colds away!

In the latest installment of our Wellness Wisdom series, Holistic Nutritionists Rebecca Kerrivan (CNP) and Marissa Laughlin (RHN) dive into the benefits of seasonal fall produce and how it can support your health through the coming months.

They discuss:

  • The nutritional benefits of fall's seasonal produce
  • Why fibre matters for digestion, gut health, and overall wellness
  • How nutrition can support your immune system in the colder months
  • Simple and cost-effective ways to add more nutrient-rich foods to your meals
  • Supplement and drink options that can help fill nutritional gaps
  • Finding comfort in Certified Organic produce
  • Practical tips for making healthy, seasonal eating easy and enjoyable for the whole family!

Want to take your seasonal eating a step further?

Rebecca has put together a FREE digital download featuring delicious fall recipes to help you incorporate more of the season’s nutrient-rich produce into your meals.

Fiddlehead season is here! After a long winter, fiddlehead season has finally arrived. Not familiar with fiddleheads or just want to learn a bit more about them, and how to cook them safely? Keep reading! You may have seen fiddleheads in the wild and not even realized it. That's because they are the furled fronds of a fledgling fern! The fiddlehead is the spiral of the plant that would unroll into a new frond of the fern plant. They are harvested before they unfurl, early in the season. Only the fiddleheads from certain fern varieties are safe to consume. Fiddleheads should never be eaten raw and must be cooked a certain way to be safe to eat, so be sure to follow the instructions below. Fiddleheads have been part of traditional diets in Northern France since the Middle Ages, and amongst many North American Indigenous populations for centuries. They are also popular in Asian cuisine dishes like gulai pakis.
