Did you know that sunscreen…

…that is, conventional chemical-based sunscreens, contain ingredients that are not only extremely harmful to our health, but also to our beloved lakes? It may be hard to think that slathering on a little sunscreen can actually harm our lakes (not to mention the reefs while you’re away on vacation) but in reality it does have an impact.

With the important education to protect our skin from sun damage, that means the number of people swimming in our lakes with chemical sunscreen on is HUGE. The chemicals wash off into the water and then are absorbed into the skin of every fish in lake. It also accumulates in our own system, which can affect our health in a big way.

Personally, I stay away from the chemical sunscreens, because they absorb straight into your bloodstream. These products often contain ingredients that irritate the skin, as well as mimics and disrupts hormones, both in humans and marine life. Do you really want to put that on your skin!? There are plenty of sunscreens that contain minerals that offer plenty of sun protection! A few of the best are Green Beaver, Goddess Garden, and Badger.

Get out, enjoy the sun, and be safe. I like to keep my skincare simple, including my sunscreen. Adding oils with natural SPF value can offer lots of sun protection, without the harmful impact to our lakes and to our bodies. My favourite? Red Raspberry Seed Oil!

Here’s a simple breakdown of SPF value in single oils:

Almond Oil – SPF around 5

Coconut Oil – SPF 4-6

Zinc Oxide – SPF 2-20 depending on how much is used

Red Raspberry Seed Oil – SPF 25-50

Carrot Seed Oil – SPF 35-40

Shea Butter – SPF 4-6

We carry a wide variety of sunscreens, making it easier to switch from chemically based to completely

natural. We’d love to chat with you in person about each of our sunscreens, and help you choose the one that is right for you.

You can make a difference, we can help.

We've all been there. You set a goal for yourself to work out more but you can't seem to get into the routine. The workouts might be too hard or you might not have the energy for it. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that at least 1 in 4 adults do not get enough physical activity. If you're inactive, you carry a 20% to 30% greater risk of premature death compared to more active lifestyles. If you have trouble finding the time or energy to work out, VILPA may be a solution for you.
