My Summer Essentials

The warm weather is right around the corner…well hopefully! When the weather changes, we tend to wear less layers which exposes our beautiful skin directly to the shining sun. After a long, dark, cold and draw our winter and spring, I know that I am trying to restore my vitamin d and mental health with as much of the sun rays and I can, but protecting my skin and body is essential for longevity. Here are my top 3 tips to care for your body during the warmer month…

1. Hydration

Increasing your water intake is very important as the temperature increases. Our bodies are always working to maintain homeostasis and when the temperature rises; our bodies naturally start to sweat. As we sweat, we loose fluid and electrolytes which can result in dehydration. If we reach a dehydration state, we can suffer with headaches, migraines, dizziness, muscle cramps, excess thirst, dark urine and fatigue. My favourite way to prevent dehydration is to add Ester C to my water 1-2 times daily. They help to reduce dehydration by replenishing minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium which are rapidly depleted as we sweat. I also love to get hydrated with the occasional coconut water!

2. Natural Sunscreen

Appling a natural, zinc oxide based sunscreen is critical for protecting our most vital organ, the skin. It wasn’t until I started my holistic journey until I realized I was forgetting to apply sunscreen to the most important part of my body, my face. Although many facial oils contain natural SPF oils, I still recommend apply a natural facial sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun. My favourite natural facial sunscreen is Mad Hippie.

Natural sunscreens tend to have a thicker consistency and be very white, but what I have found helpful when applying to my face is to mix it with my facial oil. This thins out the consistency, making it easier to apply to the face without tugging on our delicate skin.

3. Antioxidants

Another essential piece to supporting your body throughout the warmer temperatures is to increase your antioxidants by eating the rainbow. Kale, strawberries, blueberries, spinach, carrots, bell peppers, beets, sweet potatoes, zucchini, red leaf lettuce, sprouts, onions, apples, plums, oranges, celery, grapes, broccoli and so much more. To stay inside your grocery budget and reduce spoilage of produce, I highly recommend purchasing frozen fruits and vegetables to nourish the body with variety.

We've all been there. You set a goal for yourself to work out more but you can't seem to get into the routine. The workouts might be too hard or you might not have the energy for it. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that at least 1 in 4 adults do not get enough physical activity. If you're inactive, you carry a 20% to 30% greater risk of premature death compared to more active lifestyles. If you have trouble finding the time or energy to work out, VILPA may be a solution for you.
